Response to Unicef report showing child poverty levels rising - McKinnell

Catherine McKinnell MP, Labour’s Shadow Treasury Minister, responding to today’s Unicef report showing child poverty levels rising, said:

“The last Labour Government lifted over a million children out of poverty, but under David Cameron progress has ground to a halt. The Prime Minister promised to lead the most family friendly government ever, but his choices have hit families with children hard. Now the Tories want to cut tax credits again for millions of working families, while keeping a £3 billion a year tax cut for the top one per cent of earners.

“Labour’s economic plan will tackle child poverty and make work pay. We will raise the minimum wage, expand free childcare, scrap the bedroom tax and get more homes built. And we will balance the books in a fairer way, including by reversing David Cameron’s tax cut for millionaires.”
