Douglas Alexander MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, speaking following today’s PMQs, said:
“David Cameron said in 2012 that he would never be for leaving the EU, but now he refuses to give the public a straight answer. The only thing that has changed since then is that his party is more divided on Europe and less trusting of David Cameron to deliver reform.
"Labour is clear that Europe is both a strategic and an economic asset for the UK - Britain leaving Europe would present the biggest threat to British national prosperity in a generation.
"He is caught between his backbenchers who want to leave and our national interest that demands we stay. Britain badly needs leadership on Europe which puts the national interest first, but David Cameron’s damaging approach is now making it harder, not easier, for Britain to secure the change we need.
"Labour has already set out clear and achievable European reform objectives which are practical measures to help ensure that the EU works better for Britain. But despite writing to the Prime Minister in June, urging him to support Labour’s reform plans, he has still failed to reply.”
