David Cameron's fire sale of Royal Mail has put essential services which consumers and small businesses rely on at risk - Chuka Umunna

Chuka Umunna MP, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, commenting on Royal Mail’s warning on the future of the Universal Service Obligation is at risk, said:

“The Tory-led government’s fire sale of Royal Mail has put the essential services which consumers and small businesses rely on at risk. David Cameron’s promises to protect services are looking less and less credible by the day. This warning is deeply concerning and comes after consumers have already been hit with changes in collection times, with many last collections moving earlier in the day at the same time as stamp prices have risen.

“This adds insult to injury after taxpayers’ were short changed by hundreds of millions of pounds as ‘priority investors’ in the City took the lion’s share of the privatised business. Labour is clear that we must safeguard the future of the universal postal service, and ministers must urgently give assurances on the future of Royal Mail’s services and what action they will be taking to defend the USO.”

Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna MP wrote to Ofcom earlier this year in July to raise concerns on the risk to the Universal Service Obligation.
