Jack Dromey response to Government announcement on police complaints

Jack Dromey MP, Labour’s Shadow Policing Minister, responding to today’s Government announcement on police complaints, said:

“A strong and independent complaints machinery is essential to root out wrongdoing and bad practice, upholding the highest standards in our police service. Labour welcomes any steps to strengthen the police complaints system. However, Theresa May is attempting to plaster over fundamental flaws with the IPCC. Neither would the public have confidence in transferring responsibility to PCCs.

“Labour would abolish the IPCC and establish a new and effective Independent Police Standards Authority to root out wrongdoing and investigate systemic failure within police forces. The public and the police have no confidence in the IPCC and the time has come for fundamental reform.”
