New figures show the rise of zero-hours contracts and low-paid work under the Tory-led government

Commenting on new figures showing the rise of zero-hours contracts and low-paid work under the Tory-led government, Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna MP said:

“Under the Tory-led government, we’ve seen zero-hours contracts, which were once a niche and marginal feature of the labour market, becoming the norm in parts of our economy.

"At the same time, the number of people working part time because they cannot find full-time work has increased by 250,000 since May 2010, and almost half of people living in poverty today are in work.

"The next Labour government will tackle insecurity at work, setting a more ambitious target for the national minimum wage, giving local authorities new enforcement powers and outlawing zero-hours contracts where they exploit people.”
