Jack Dromey MP, Labour’s Shadow Police Minister, responding to the police grant settlement, said:
“This statement confirms a real terms cut of £415 million on top of cuts to policing that have already seen 16,000 police officers go, including 8,000 from the front line.
“The British model of policing, neighbourhood policing and building a real relationship with local communities is being systematically undermined by the Tories.
“Already we are seeing progress in tackling emerging crimes and in getting justice for victims going backwards, while response times to 999 calls for help are up to 30 per cent longer.
“The first stage of Labour’s Zero-Based Review of the Home Office has shown how Labour plans can make savings to help get the deficit down and prevent 1,100 officers being cut next year.
“When money is tight, we need to get the best out of every pound, challenge waste and find new savings. Labour will do things differently - abolishing Police and Crime Commissioners and requiring forces to work together to make the savings they need, so they can keep protecting communities too.”
