New figures have shown the hardest hit regions in the country by the government’s decision to raise the state pension by just 87p are: North West (at least 63,180 people affected), South East (at least 54,549 people affected) and West Midlands (at least 51,420 people affected):
The five hardest hit constituencies in the country are:
• Isle of Wight – 1580 people affected
• Kingston upon Hull East – 1430 people affected
• North Tyneside – 1420 people affected
• Louth and Horncastle – 1400 people affected
• Waveney – 1380 people affected
Earlier in the month the government were forced to admit that up to 1.6 million pensioners across the UK have seen their state pension rise by just 87p, rather than £2.85 which ministers first claimed.
On 4th December 2014 the government announced the state pension will rise by £2.85 a week. Ministers were forced to admit in the following week that hundreds of thousands of pensioners would see a rise of just 87p in their state pension income.
Labour’s Shadow Pensions minister, Gregg McClymont said:
“1.6 million pensioners have been shocked to find that their state pension income is to rise by just 87p from April, not the £2.85 per week rise the Government promised. Rather than being open and honest, government ministers have tried to hide the fact that many people who have done the right thing, worked hard and saved for a pension are losing out.
“Today I’m calling on David Cameron to come clean with 1.6 million pensioners about the future value of their state pensions. His ministers should have been upfront about the 87p rise in the Government’s state pension income announcement to Parliament. This lack of openness and transparency about the losers from state pension reform undermines public confidence in the Government’s policy.”
