Dan Jarvis MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Minister, commenting on the Chief Inspector of Prisons’ report into HM Prison & Young Offenders Institution Feltham, said:
“This concerning report is yet another example of the mounting prisons crisis on David Cameron’s watch.
“The fact that one in four offenders are being held in effective solitary confinement is shocking and unacceptable. Not enough good training is being delivered and boys are being locked up with little to do. There is little hope of young people being rehabilitated in these conditions and it’s the public’s safety that will be put at risk as a result.
“This report underlines why Chris Grayling should be concentrating on improving standards in our existing prisons rather than ploughing ahead with his flawed plans for an £85m Secure College. This is not a time to be wasting public money on an untried, untested and potentially dangerous institution without any support from a single independent expert.”
