It is shocking complacency that the Education Secretary thinks it is ok for class sizes to exceed the ideal limit of 30 pupils - Tristram Hunt

Tristram Hunt MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, responding to Nicky Morgan’s interview on the Today programme this morning, said:

“It is shocking complacency that the Education Secretary thinks it is ok for class sizes to exceed the ideal limit of 30 pupils. David Cameron made a promise to parents in 2010 that he would deliver smaller schools and smaller class sizes. Yet this promise has been well and truly broken, with the number of infants in large classes of over 30 soaring by 200 per cent since then, up to nearly 100,000 young children, and five times the number of “titan” primary schools with over 800 pupils.

“This attitude from Nicky Morgan that it now doesn’t really matter, is not good enough for the children who are being crammed into ever expanding classes, nor their parents, who have the worry of whether the schools they are applying to this week will have enough capacity for their child. It is clear that five more years of the Tories brings the threat of ever more children forced into large classes and further damage to standards.”
