Number of GPs has fallen under this Government - Jamie Reed

Jamie Reed MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Minister, said:

“The number of GPs has fallen under this Government as medical students have seen the pressure Ministers have put on general practice. GP morale has collapsed and now twice as many are emigrating and 60 per cent said they were considering early retirement. It’ll take more than a video to undo years of Tory damage.

“David Cameron scrapped Labour’s guarantee of a GP appointment within 48 hours and now a million people turn to A&E when they can’t see their GP - a root cause of the Tory A&E crisis. He should match Labour’s pledge to invest an extra £2.5 billion a year to recruit 8,000 more GPs and 20,000 nurses.”
