HMIC report on Integrity in Policing - Jack Dromey

Jack Dromey MP, Labour’s Shadow Policing Minister, responding to the HMIC report on Integrity in Policing, said:

“Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary rightly commends the police service on real progress in rooting out corruption and the support of police officers who want no place for the corrupt few who tarnish the reputation of the service as a whole. We agree with the HMIC that integrity should be central to police culture.

“What the report highlights, however, is that, whilst police forces have made progress, variation between forces has led to varied results. This clearly shows that the need for strong leadership to ensure a consistency of approach, leadership which the Independent Police Complaints Commission has failed to provide.

“There is a widespread view that the IPCC is not fit for purpose properly to hold the police to account. That is why Labour replace it with a much tougher Police Standards Authority to enforce the highest standards of conduct and integrity and to ensure all police forces act so that there is no hiding place for corruption.“
