Response on Russia's approach to the Baltic States - Douglas Alexander

Douglas Alexander MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, responding to comments by Michael Fallon, on Russia’s approach to the Baltic States, said:

“President Putin clearly has a strategy for the Baltic states - that emphasises dependence on natural gas and the manipulation of Russian minorities - which needs to be recognised and responded by both the EU and NATO.

“NATO, which enshrines European cooperation within solid transatlantic bonds, remains a cornerstone of our continent’s peace and prosperity.

“Following recent developments in eastern Ukraine, the international community must be ready to increase the pressure on the Kremlin by extending economic sanctions if President Putin refuses to change course.

“President Putin risks further isolating Russia on the world stage if he continues to display belligerence and aggression in the face of established international laws and norms.”
