Response to Paddy Tipping's comments on child abuse in children's homes in Nottinghamshire  - Yvette Cooper

Yvette Cooper MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, In response to comments by Paddy Tipping, Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire, said:

“Reports of horrific child abuse in children’s homes in Nottinghamshire are deeply distressing. But we know it is not just in Nottingham - or in Rochdale, Rotherham or Oxfordshire - that children have been let down and betrayed by people who were supposed to be keeping them safe. Child abuse affects all communities and there is a responsibility on everyone to act to tackle it - investigate historic offences, reach out to protect children at risk now and act to prevent abuse in the future.

"Paddy Tipping is right to say that the key to achieving this is to listen to children. In too many cases, their voices were ignored, brushed aside or - in the very worst examples - actively discredited. We need to address this failing urgently and make changes to stop it happening again."
