Allegations of serious abuse at Yarl's Wood "incredibly disturbing" - Yvette Cooper

YvetteCooper MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, in response to allegations of serious abuse at Yarl’s Wood, said:

“These are incredibly disturbing allegations - stories of guards threatening and abusing women, a woman having a miscarriage being refused assistance, and serious incidents of self-harm. Given the repeated and serious allegations being made against Serco guards at Yarl’s Wood, it is appalling that the Government refused an independent inquiry before renewing Serco’s contract last year. The Home Secretary is responsible for making sure people are treated humanely, and for the contract she signed with the company - yet she has repeatedly failed to investigate abuse

"When allegations of sexual abuse emerged over 18 months ago, we called for a full investigation into the running of Yarl’s Wood. Never has it been more urgent that this review gets underway so more vulnerable women are not put in these incredibly distressing and dangerous situations. And the police should look at whether there are grounds for them to investigate these allegations too.

“Immigration rules must be enforced, including deporting those who do not have a legal right to live in our country. But these rules should be upheld with humanity and decency.”
