IanMurray MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Trade and Investment, responding to aBIS Select Committee report on Royal Mail’s Universal Service Obligation said:
“The Tories cannot be trusted to protect postal services. Taxpayers have been left short changed by hundreds of millions of pounds after David Cameron’s Royal Mail fire sale, and now we are seeing vital postal services being put at risk as a result.
“This report lays bare the threat to Royal Mail’s Universal Service Obligation under which essential services are provided, including daily deliveries to any part of the United Kingdom to the same cost and standard.
“Labour will secure the Universal Service Obligation, putting the consumers and small businesses which rely on Royal Mail’s services first. We will ensure that Royal Mail services continue to be available through the Post Office network and that other providers are subject to high performance and service quality standards, while ensuring that we don’t see further huge hikes in stamp prices as we’ve seen under the Tory-led government.”
