Angela Eagle MP, Labour’s Shadow Leader of the House of Commons, responding to the motion tabled on the re-election of the Speaker, said:

“This is a grubby last minute plot in the dying hours of this parliament to try and change the procedures of the House. The Tories are trying to play politics with the speakership because they know they won’t win a majority at the next election.”
