Harriet Harman and Vernon Coaker comment ahead of Armed Forces Day

Harriet Harman MP, Interim Leader of the Labour Party, said:

“Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for this country to show our respect and gratitude for our armed services.

“Men and women in the Army, Navy and Air Force serve us with dignity, pride, bravery and sacrifice, with unquestioning professionalism and courage.

“It is important to acknowledge not only veterans and serving personnel, but also their families. From my visits to military bases over the years I have heard from military families the importance of the support they give their relatives and the challenges of a family life of absence; moving home, moving schools, finding doctors and dentists, arranging childcare when grandparents are no longer nearby. Service families also deserve our support, recognition and respect.

“I welcome the opportunity Armed Forces day brings, for the country to pause together and express our gratitude.”

Vernon Coaker MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, said:

“Armed Forces Day is a chance to demonstrate the strength of unity between the Services and the nation. A chance to reflect upon the enduring commitment, unstinting professionalism and resolute courage our Armed Forces have always shown.

“It is a time to recognise the contribution of the services families, whose quiet courage is an invaluable support for those on the frontline; a time to mark the selfless work of the Armed Forces charities.

“And in this year when we mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, it is a time to remember the individual bravery and collective determination of our veterans, shown on countless battlefields overseas, that is not only awe-inspiring, but secured the freedom we enjoy today.

“Today is a day when we should show our gratitude to the Armed Forces community. Today is a day for us all to say thank you.”
