EVEL - The Leader of the House and the Prime Minister should not be so reckless with the future of the United Kingdom - Angela Eagle

Angela Eagle MP, Labour’s Shadow Leader of the House, responding to the announcement on English Votes for English Laws and the debate and vote on the matter in less than two weeks, said:

“Labour thinks it is important for the views of English MPs to be expressed clearly on English matters, and we should consider such changes as part of a Constitutional Convention openly looking at how our country is governed.

“The Government’s proposals on English Votes for English Laws go much further than proposed by the McKay Commission this Government set up. The Government is rushing ahead with its plans without proper consultation, and without following the usual procedures.

“By ignoring the warnings of the McKay Commission, these proposals risk the union rather than saving it. Why are the Government in such a rush to enact such partisan proposals that they have not even consulted on?

“The Leader of the House and the Prime Minister are playing with fire –they should not be so reckless with the future of the United Kingdom.”
