Response to Greek referendum result - Chris Leslie

Chris Leslie MP, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, responding to the Greek referendum result, said:

“The EU faces its most fundamental test for a generation and the Chancellor should press both sides to plan an orderly way forward.

“The Government should provide support to exporters affected by the closure of Greek banks and reassure British tourists whose travel arrangements may be affected by the turmoil in the Greek economy.

“Eurozone countries need to do their best to offer the chance for fresh negotiations. And the Greek government must face up to its responsibilities for stronger governance and economic reform.”

On the Treasury’s decision to reduce the deposit protection level for UK bank accounts, Chris Leslie said:

“At a time of such heightened anxieties about banking across Europe, the Chancellor needs to understand that this reduced level of protection for UK bank deposits will cause concern. UK bank deposit insurance should be robust and give confidence to account holders and he should review the reasons behind this untimely cut in protection.”
