Government has suffered a major set-back in the Lords on EVEL - Angela Eagle

Angela Eagle, Labour’s Shadow Leader of the House, responding to the vote in the House of Lords calling for the Government to establish a Joint Committee on English Votes for English Laws, said:

“Tonight the Government has suffered a major set-back in the Lords on English Votes for English Laws.

“Its current approach of trying to rush through controversial and complex constitutional changes has been roundly rejected by Peers across the House of Lords.

"This vote underlines the need for the Government to work on a cross-party basis and establish a Joint Committee of Both Houses. Such a Committee could properly scrutinise these proposals and provide a basis from which to proceed.

"Labour is now calling on the Government to see sense on these important constitutional changes and accept that to get this right it needs to proceed by consensus."
