Heidi Alexander MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, in response to the Royal College of Midwives Heads of Midwifery survey, said:
“Expectant mothers should be confident that the NHS is able to give the best possible care to them and their babies at what is one of the most important times in their life.
“All too often though maternity units are under-staffed and unable to respond to rising demand, with some even having to close their doors.
“David Cameron promised to recruit 3,000 more midwives but has failed to do so. If mums are to feel comfortable with midwives they know and trust, this staffing issue must be addressed.”
