Luciana Berger MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Mental Health, responding to the Nuffield Trust and Health Foundation’s report showing people with mental ill health had almost five times more emergency hospital admissions last year relative to people without, said:
“This report must act as a wakeup call to Ministers.
“These shocking figures show the importance of ensuring that treatment and support for mental health problems is joined up with treatment for physical conditions.
“Too often mental health is either neglected or treated in isolation from other physical conditions. This causes unnecessary and often preventable suffering for patients and further expense to the NHS.
“People with mental illness must not be treated differently to other patients when it comes to their physical health. Ministers must take urgent action to turn their rhetoric about parity of esteem between physical and mental health services into reality.”
