John McDonnell MP, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, responding to the Survation poll showing seven in 10 people want the Government to intervene to save the steel industry, said:

“No matter how much the Tories try to spin it the public won’t be fooled, they know that this Government has let down our steel workers.

"It is time they put ideology to one side and listen to what the majority of the British public want, which is to intervene now to support the sector.

"Our country simply can’t afford to lose the jobs, skills and the infrastructure that the steel industry provides.

"It’s time this Government acted before long term and irreversible damage is done to our economy.”
