Comment on children in unregistered schools - Lucy Powell

Lucy Powell MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, commenting on Ofsted’s warning to Nicky Morgan today about children in unregistered schools, said:

“This is now the second time Ofsted have warned this Government that significant numbers of children, including those who could be at risk of being radicalised, are ending up in unregistered provision, where they could be exposed to extremist ideologies. It is hard to fathom why arrangements for closing down unregistered schools remain inadequate and swift action on this issue has not been taken. With children at risk of being exposed to harm, exploitation or undue influences, more inertia from this Government simply isn’t good enough.

“There is currently a dangerous void in the local oversight of our schools system, created by this Government’s education policy. Rather than just more warm words, David Cameron needs to take urgent action to ensure that children are out of harm’s way.”
