Angela Eagle MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, responding to the publication of a review of research councils by Sir Paul Nurse, said:
“This is an authoritative review from a distinguished and world-leading scientist, so it is right that we carefully consider its recommendations.
“Labour has long argued that our country needs a culture of long-termism in Government and business, and an industrial strategy which helps to support our world-leading business and industries, including in areas like research, innovation and science, to create more of the well-paid, high-skilled, private-sector jobs we want to see.
“Science is vital for our future growth and prosperity, and the Chancellor should use the Spending Review next week to make sure areas that drive productivity and growth are prioritised - rather than a slash and burn approach which could damage innovation just as much as it would dent research and impact our future prosperity.”
