Richard Burden MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Roads, commenting at the start of Road Safety Week, said
“Brake’s Road Safety Week is an invaluable initiative for keeping our roads as safe as possible. Everyone is a road user and the development of a coherent strategy on road safety should be a top priority for transport ministers.
“Road safety has improved a lot in the past couple of decades but last year we saw the first spike in road casualties for 17 years. The Government is failing to show leadership on road safety: they scrapped national road safety targets, cut traffic police numbers and are failing to repair Britain’s local roads.
“This Road Safety Week, the Government should reinstate national road safety standards and ensure we have the cycling and walking infrastructure that will make road users safer too.”
