Kevan Jones MP, Labour’s Shadow Armed Forces Minister, commenting on the Government’s announcement of an improved compensation package for armed forces veterans who suffer from mesothelioma disease, said:
“Thanks to campaigning by the Royal British Legion and our work throughout the passage of the Armed Forces Bill, Labour has helped secure a better deal for veterans who are victims of mesothelioma disease.
“In clear breach of the Armed Forces Covenant, veterans who suffer from this awful disease have been receiving up to £150,000 less than civilians. So we are delighted that this pressure has finally forced the Government into action.
“Our proposals in the Armed Forces Bill also mean that Ministers will now have to publish a comprehensive record of sexual assault and rape that will allow greater transparency and protection for those serving in our Armed Forces.
“We owe a duty of care to our Service Personnel, who put their lives on the line to keep our country safe. This news is a great victory for all those who have campaigned long and hard for this injustice to be recognised and resolved.”
