Only four months since George Osborne claimed to have abandoned his proposed cuts to tax credits in the Spending Review we discover today in Parliament he has sneaked through a cut of up to £250 million pounds a year from 800,000 working families across Britain.
Rebecca Long Bailey MP, Shadow Treasury Minister, speaking after the Statutory Instrument Committee meeting today at which the Tories pushed through cuts to the income rise disregard from April 2016, said:
“The Chancellor wanted to give the impression he had reversed his cuts to tax credits in full, but like many of his promises, the image he tries to convey in public doesn’t match up with what he does when he thinks no one is looking.
“These cuts will have a huge impact on low paid workers, especially those on zero hours contracts and in other forms of insecure work, who are already struggling to make ends meet.”
