Shadow
Prisons Minister Jo Stevens, commenting on Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of
Prisons’ report on Woodhill prison, published today (Tuesday 15 March), said:
“Another day, another appalling report into the state of our prisons. The high
levels of self-inflicted deaths at Woodhill are extremely concerning, as is the
fact that the prison management have failed to implement previous
recommendations or act on past warnings by the Ombudsman.
“No one can disagree with the government’s stated aim to improve education
in our prisons but it is difficult to see how there can be any real focus on
learning when one in five offenders at Woodhill say they feel unsafe in the
prison.”
