Shadow Police Minister backs Stalking Counts campaign
- New research released by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust found that 1 in 5 British women and 1 in 12 British men have experienced stalking in their lifetime.
- However, according to the Trust, the number of stalking cases recorded by the police represents less than 1 per cent of the cases that take place each year.
- On average, victims of stalking who do go to the police will have experienced 100 incidents of stalking.
Jack Dromey MP, Labour’s Shadow Police Minister, said:
“Stalking can be devastating for victims, and we know that a significant number of cases involve physical violence.
“We now know that the number of cases has been vastly underestimated. This shocking new research shows that only 1 per cent of stalking cases that take place each year are known to the police. An even smaller number still have resulted in a successful prosecution, robbing victims of justice.
“The Government should be ensuring adequate resources are available to tackle this growing problem. Yet the Tories have slashed police officers by 18,000 and broken their promise to protect police funding.
“The Tories need to put public safety first and take stalking seriously. Otherwise traumatised victims of stalking will forever live in fear.”
