Owen Smith MP, Shadow Work and Pension Secretary, commenting on the publication of the Resolution Foundation’s Universal Challenge report, said:
“This report confirms the devastating impact of Tory cuts to Universal Credit that will leave 2.5 million working families over £2,100 a year worse off. This will completely undermine the work incentives that were supposed to be at the heart of Universal Credit.
“Stephen Crabb had a chance to change course on this terrible policy, but instead from his first days at the DWP he fully committed to the current Universal Credit plan, which clearly includes these brutal cuts. He should reflect on that mistake, take the advice in this report and of the Labour Party and reverse these cuts urgently. If he fails to do so then no one can be in any doubt that he is working against the interest of low and middle paid working people, who are already struggling to make ends meet.”
