Rebecca Long-Bailey MP, Labour’s Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, pushed the government for an early end to the so-called ‘tampon tax’ in key parliamentary committee today.
Over the past few weeks, Parliament has been debating the Finance Bill, which has included a broad range of issues.
Following a campaign by the MP for Dewsbury, Paula Sheriff, The Prime Minister had previously promised to abolish the “tampon tax”, but their proposal only allows Ministers to do so at a later point if they so wish.
Speaking in the Finance Bill Committee today Rebecca Long Bailey MP, said:
“We do not think that the government is right to say that this is “job done”. On the contrary, it is a case of ‘we now have the tools, and may do the job later if we feel like it’.
“It’s simply not good enough to not meet the promises made by European leaders, the Prime Minister, his government and the winning side of the recent referendum, and it isn’t good enough for women.
“The Tories need to stop dragging their feet and end the ‘tampon tax’ now.“
