Our thoughts are with the families of all those innocent aid workers cruelly killed in this attack just for doing their job -  Emily Thornberry

Responding to the attack on an aid convoy near the Syrian city of Aleppo, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, Emily Thornberry, said:

“Our thoughts are with the families of all those innocent aid workers cruelly killed in this attack just for doing their job, as well with the hundreds of thousands still waiting for humanitarian relief inside East Aleppo.

"If this was indeed a deliberate attack, it is a war crime for which there can be no excuse, whatever strong feelings there are in the Syrian military about the weekend bombing of their troops at Tharda mountain.

"But while condemning the attack on the UN convoy, we must not allow it to destroy the recent efforts for peace, and the hope they offered to the Syrian people.

"It is therefore incumbent on all parties to get back round the negotiating table and renew efforts in good faith towards a lasting ceasefire, the isolation of Jihadist terrorists, and the opening of safe channels for humanitarian aid to besieged areas.

"Blame, anger and calls for retaliation come easy on a day like this, but they are not the answer, and they are worthless to a Syrian people who have already suffered too long.

"The only way to stop that suffering and end this conflict is to get back round the table as soon as possible, and start afresh on the hard work of negotiating a lasting peace.”
