Jo Stevens MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Minister for Prisons and Probation, commenting on the PAC select committee report into Transforming Rehabilitation said:
“Labour, probation practitioners, their trade union and experts across the sector warned of the damaging consequences of the Tories and Liberal Democrats privatising parts of the probation system.
“The breakup of the service was supposed to transform rehabilitation, but reoffending rates remain unchanged and the number of recalls to prison has increased substantially. These so-called reforms are clearly failing.
“This is a Tory Government who have messed around with criminal justice policy incessantly, for ideological rather than evidence-based reasons. We’ve now got a probation service on the brink and a prison service in crisis.
“It’s high time the Tory Government admitted that their reckless reorganisation isn’t working and they should bring their failed experiment with privatisation to an end.”
