The Tories' six years in Government have resulted in a shocking deterioration in our prisons leaving them in crisis – Jo Stevens MP

Reacting to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons report into HMP/YOI Isis, Shadow Minister for Prisons and Probation Jo Stevens MP, said:

“This brand new training prison, Her Majesty’s Prison and Young Offenders Institute Isis, opened in 2010 and in six years of Tory Government, the prison has experienced rocketing violence, drug use, self-harm and chaos leading the Prison Inspector to condemn the jail as failing in its primary purpose. The report found that less than half of the young prisoners were doing anything purposeful.

“In 2013 a restricted emergency regime was put in place because of a shortage of prison staff, and despite this being criticised by HMIP in 2014, that regime is still in place.

“The Tories’ six years in Government have resulted in a shocking deterioration in our prisons leaving them in crisis. Liz Truss can rehash any number of prison reform announcements in her speech to the Tory faithful this week, but the fact is that the Tories have failed victims of crime, taxpayers, prison staff and prisoners.“
