Angela Rayner comments ahead of a vote today on maintenance grants
Angela Rayner MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, speaking ahead of a vote today on maintenance grants, said:
“Today, the Labour Party will try to bring back maintenance grants for university students from low and middle income backgrounds.
“The decision to replace the grant with a loan, which was not subject to a full vote and proper scrutiny in Parliament, is opposed by Labour.
“A future Labour government will reverse this cut, and restore the student maintenance grant, which was worth up to £3,387 to students from the poorest backgrounds.
“Labour is hoping to draw on cross-party support at the vote to bring back grants.”
