Failure on housing is damaging life chances in Britain - John Healey

John Healey MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Housing, responding to the recommendations on housing in the Social Mobility Commission’s ‘State of the Nation report on social mobility in Great Britain’, said:

“This report from the Government-backed Social Mobility Commission makes clear that Ministers’ failure on housing is damaging life chances in Britain.

“Even more concerning, their findings show that the Government’s ambitions for housing are entirely inadequate: Tory Ministers are aiming to build too few homes, and far too few genuinely affordable homes.

“I welcome the Commission’s backing for Labour’s plans to build 100,000 affordable public homes a year to rent and buy. In the Autumn Statement next week the Chancellor should turn the page on six years of failure and do the same.”
