Barbara Keeley MP Shadow Cabinet Minister for Social Care, reacting to the BBC Panorama programme on the Morleigh Care Homes, said:
“Once again we see reports of shocking incidents at a nursing home with standards of care so poor that people should never experience them.
“The Care Quality Commission has said that it had rated the homes in question ‘Requires improvement’ and has issued warning notices. However, now the Commission says that the owner allowed the services to deteriorate further and that she has ‘utterly neglected her duty of care to the residents of these homes’.
“I am calling on Jeremy Hunt to re-examine the powers that the Care Quality Commission and Care Commissioners have to deal with such shockingly poor care standards. I would like to see them have the power to shut down failing care and nursing homes.”
