Clive Lewis MP, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, responding to the announcement by Tata, said:

“This is fantastic news for steel workers, who can now celebrate Christmas with their families and communities, knowing that their livelihoods are secure. It is also a boost to the whole UK economy, which is keeping a valuable industry on its shores. Powered by the promised extra investment, the steel produced as a result of this deal will be a foundation stone of our industrial strategy.

"This wouldn’t have happened without the dedicated work of the Save Our Steel campaign, which brought together trade unions, families, the Welsh Government, and the Labour Party to fight for our steel industry. Everyone involved should feel proud of today’s decision.

"In contrast, the Government has dragged its feet at every step. It is disappointing that this looks like a significant deterioration of the pension prospects of the workers at the steel plant, whose security in retirement has been weakened by the Tory Government’s refusal to offer support. We will be keeping a close eye on the consultation as it develops, to ensure that steel workers and pensions get the best deal possible.”
