Gill Furniss MP, Shadow Minister for Steel, Postal Affairs and Consumer Protection, responding to the breakdown of talks regarding planned postal strikes, said:
“Ever since Royal Mail was privatised three years ago, the Post Office has struggled due to a lack of vision on the part of management.
“Instead of expanding services and using the skills of a dedicated workforce, those in charge seem content to let this beloved British institution slide into oblivion through a programme of closures and cost cutting.
“Post Office employees have been leading the way in calling for a different future, but those calls have repeatedly fallen on deaf ears, with employees left out of every major decision effecting them.
“It is deeply disappointing that management have once again rejected the unions offer to call off their strike and get around the table for a proper discussion of what a prosperous Twenty-first Century Post Office should look like. The Government needs to act to resolve this situation.”
