Richard Burgon MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, responding to a review ordered by Liz Truss, which would ban victims of domestic abuse from being questioned in family courts by their abusers, said:
“No victim of domestic abuse should have to face the ordeal of being cross-examined by their abuser.
“Labour has been pressing the Ministry of Justice to end this disgraceful practice for years. It is welcome that they finally appear to be taking action.
“However, the truth is that there are still far too many people forced to represent themselves in the family court because of this Tory Government’s cuts to legal aid.
“Ministers need to stop dragging their feet and launch the long-awaited review into their botched reform of legal aid.”
