Commenting on reports that the government is planning to ban police cautions for serious offences, Sadiq Khan MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary said:

“We have called for a ban on cautions for serious and violent offences, so it’s about time this out of touch Tory-led government woke up to the public’s concerns. Cautions are being handed out for serious and violent crimes like rape. No wonder victims of crime question whether the justice system is really on their side.

We are now into the 4th year of this Government and the rhetoric does not match the reality. The public will be wary of this announcement given the number of broken promises on sentencing by this Government since the last election.”
