Douglas Alexander MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, commenting on the situation in Egypt, said:
“The latest major escalation in Egypt highlights the potential for further bloodshed so long as new elections continue to be delayed and progress towards reconciliation is stalled.
“Supporters from all sides must now show restraint to avoid any further bloodshed and loss of life.
“The current stalemate can only be resolved through dialogue and an immediate return to negotiation over a sustainable political settlement for Egypt. The priority now must be for Egypt’s generals to set a clear path towards peaceful reconciliation and swift elections.”
