Douglas Alexander MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, responding to reports that Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles are being destroyed, said:

“Recent confirmation that the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles has begun is an important and welcome step forward.

“These latest developments demonstrate that the unanimously agreed UN Security Council Resolution 2118 offers the best chance to secure the scheduled destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles.

“As the inspectors continue their work in the coming months, it is vital that the UN and OPCW staff on the ground are granted full access to the regime’s stockpiles both in Damascus and elsewhere across Syria.”
