David Hanson MP, Labour’s Shadow Immigration Minister, responding to Government plans on human trafficking said:
“Increasing sentences is sensible, but we also need to do far more to increase the number of prosecutions. The last government report on this subject revealed in the year they identified 946 potential victims of human trafficking there were only 8 convictions.
“The Government also need to wake up to fact that 60% of trafficked children simply go missing again in the UK after they’ve come to the attention of the authorities. It should be a source of shame to the Government that too often modern-day slavery victims go unprotected and back into the hands of traffickers.
“The Government should take forward Labour’s plans in this area to prevent modern day slavery.”
