Sadiq Khan MP Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, commenting on the publication of the Chief Inspector of Prisons Annual Report, said:

“Today’s report provides further damning evidence that this incompetent Government’s claims of a rehabilitation revolution are nothing but hot air. David Cameron and Chris Grayling need to read this report and have a long hard look at their record over the last three and a half years. There’s little evidence that they are providing the work and rehabilitation they promised and many occasions prisons are nothing more than warehouses for offenders.
 
“The public want confidence that those behind bars will be both punished and reformed. But, on this Government’s watch, there’s been no sign of improvement. What’s worrying is just how low a priority tackling reoffending is for many prisons.
 
“The Chief Inspector’s ominous warnings of cracks beginning to show in the prisons system should worry us all. Just last week, the Government’s incompetence was on show as the prisons system came perilously close to running out of places. Running out of prison places is a clear illustration of the failures of this Government’s justice policies. Offenders are being neither properly punished or reformed.”
