Julie Elliott MP, Labour’s Shadow Energy and Climate Change Minister, commenting ahead of a speech from the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg on the environment, said:

“You can’t trust a word Nick Clegg and the Lib Dems say. This desperate attempt to distance himself from the Government can’t disguise the fact that on this Government’s watch investment in clean energy has collapsed, carbon emissions increased more in the UK than anywhere else in the EU last year, and it was the Liberal Democrats who blocked a decarbonisation target to clean up Britain’s power supply.

“People will judge the Lib Dems on what they do, not what they say. Whatever Nick Clegg says, the truth is that under them and the Tories energy bills have gone up by £300 and their promise to be the greenest government ever has gone up in smoke.”
