The Government’s flagship energy efficiency scheme clearly is not working - Jonathan Reynolds

Jonathan Reynolds MP, Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change, commenting on new statistics showing that only 219 households have had green deal measures installed, said:

“Because of David Cameron’s failure to tackle energy bills people are desperate for help to get their bills down. We know that improved energy efficiency is the best way to do this but the Government’s flagship energy efficiency scheme clearly is not working.

“Ministers said the Green Deal would be the biggest home improvement scheme since the Second World War but so far installation work has only been completed on 219 properties.

“Consumers simply do not think that the Green Deal is a good deal, with concerns about hidden costs and high interest rates regularly being cited as issues that are deterring people from signing up.

“It has been obvious that there are serious problems with the Green Deal for some time, and these latest statistics just reinforce that point, but Ministers are still not getting to grips with the problem.

“Labour is committed to replacing the Green Deal with a programme that is a better deal for consumers, and can make the energy efficiency improvements we do desperately need.”
