Shabana Mahmood MP, Labour’s Shadow Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, responding to the Public Accounts Committee’s report on HMRC tax collection, said:
 
“This is a damning report on the failure of David Cameron’s government to tackle tax avoidance and evasion. At a time when ordinary people are facing a cost-of-living crisis and the deficit is high this failure is inexcusable.
 
“Ministers need to explain why the amount of uncollected tax rose last year, why the Swiss tax deal has raised a fraction of the revenues promised and why the Eurobonds loophole has not been closed down.
 
“Not only has this government given a huge tax cut to people earning over £150,000, it is now clear they are also failing to collect the taxes that are due.”
