Ivan Lewis comments on the latest round of Haass Talks

Ivan Lewis MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, commenting on the latest round of Haass Talks, said:

“The failure to reach a final agreement is deeply disappointing. However, significant common ground has been identified which should be the basis for future progress.

"It is now essential the parties return to these issues as a matter of urgency in the new year supported by the full engagement of the UK and Irish Governments.

"The vast majority of people in Northern Ireland want to see their political leaders make the compromises necessary to overcome outstanding differences.

"Northern Ireland has come a long way over the past fifteen years and this setback will not be allowed to derail the peace process. However, tensions relating to flags, parades and the past are running sores which undermine efforts to focus on building a better, shared future. Unless, addressed properly they will continue to fuel division and damage prospects for reconciliation.

"Richard Haass and Megan O'Sullivan deserve our thanks for their sterling efforts to achieve an agreed way forward.”
